Cannabidiol or CBDis one of the hottest trends in the medicinal world today. Many people who don’t use marijuana will often take CBD products or supplements because of the medical benefits of the cannabinoid. And while CBD is definitely a great thing with many benefits, there are also many misconceptions about it.
1. CBD is the Only Thing That Gives Marijuana Medical Value
There’s this belief among many casual marijuana users or people in public that CBD is the cannabinoid that gives marijuana all its medicinal value, and THC is the one that gets you high. But that isn’t necessarily true. THC does have medicinal effects that do not occur with CBD. Likewise, there are dozens of other cannabinoids in marijuana that have various positive medical benefits that have nothing to do with CBD. So yes, CBD is good and has a lot of medical value, but so do other cannabinoids.
2. CBD Works Best Without THC
Considering how many products there are that only contain CBD and not THC, you might think that CBD is best when it’s by itself. But that isn’t true. Studies have shown that THC and CBD work synergistically, meaning that the presence of one enhances the effects of the other. So actually, CBD works best WITH THC.
3. CBD Can Treat Anything
You might have seen this tweet that went viral recently:
me: my grandpa died
guy who takes cbd: he should try cbd oil. works so good for me i swear by it. u can vape it or even eat it like in edible form
me: he’s dead
The joke is playing on the common belief by many people that CBD can treat virtually anything. And while there are certainly a lot of conditions that are helped by CBD, there are still plenty more it doesn’t affect. And in fact we don’t have a ton of scientific research that backs up how CBD affects many conditions people use it for.
4. High Doses of CBD are Better than Low Doses
CBD is good for you, therefore the more you take, the better it is for you. However, that’s not necessarily the case. A lot of times, lower doses of CBD are actually more effective, particularly if you’re consuming it with THC.
5. Legalizing CBD is Just as Good as Legalizing Medical Marijuana
Many states in America without legalized medical marijuana have legalized CBD products with little to no THC in them. They often argue that since CBD is the part of marijuana with all the benefits, this is good enough. But as we pointed out with points one and two on this list, CBD isn’t the only part of marijuana with medical benefits, and CBD often works better with regular doses of THC as well.
6. CBD is the Same From All Sources
Last month Congress passed the 2018 Farm Bill that legalized hemp farming and products. This also means that hemp-derived CBD products are now legal as well. However, marijuana is a far superior source for CBD than hemp. Hemp contains very little amounts of CBD, so you have to grow a lot of it to get a little bit of CBD. But most cannabis has a decent amount of CBD, so you don’t need to grow as much of it. And making CBD in a lab is also not ideal because lab-made CBD lacks the other cannabinoids and terpenes that help enhance and supplement the effects of CBD.
